Let's Celebrate THE FINALE IN STYLE

Congratulations class of 2014!

ABOUT COMMENCEMENT

Commencement marks the start of a new chapter in your lives. It is also the time that we as a University celebrate the official graduation of a whole new cohort. Every year, this new graduating cohort joins the ranks of thousands of SMU alumni as future leaders of business, government, academia and private enterprise. At SMU Commencement, we celebrate each of our students who will lead and shape our world!

1ORIGINS

Medieval Europe. University of Bologna, Italy, 1160 A.D. Started as an initiation ceremony for new university teachers. Now adopted by colleges and universities worldwide.

2THE TRADITIONS OF ACADEMIC REGALIA

The full academic regalia consist of a traditional gown, a hood and mortarboard/cap with tassel. The original dress of a scholar was the dress of a cleric. As buildings in those days were unheated, long gowns with hood were worn for protection against the cold.

ABOUT COMMENCEMENT
REGALIA, GOWNS

GOWNS:

MORTARBOARD:

The mortarboard is usually square with a tassel attached to it. The tassel is moved from right to left when their degree is conferred.

SMU Official GownsFor the Patron, Chancellor, Chairman and Guest of Honour

Gonfalons

The School gonfalons carry the SMU crest in the centre against a white backdrop. The lower portion of each gonfalon has the school's name fully spelt out in white against the designated colour of each School.

University Mace

The university mace represents the university's power to grant degrees. The SMU mace has a 'retro-modernist' design, incorporating the traditional uses and metaphors of a mace, with modern aesthetics suitable for the 21st century beginnings of a university. At the top of the headset is the text "SINGAPORE 2000". This suggests hierarchy, with the country and state at the very pinnacle. The three sectional banners of the headset bear the symbol of the "Tangram Lion", representing SMU. The three sectional banners also represent the values of SMU in innovative pedagogy, research and educational excellence. The three jadeite inserts on each side of each quadrant banner symbolize the staff and students of SMU, the community at large and Singapore.
